How you will make an impact

You’ll design and assist with the planning and supervision of transmission line projects that are critical to the success of the electrical Transmission system in Vermont.

The Transmission Line Engineer will develop an understanding of the Vermont power system with a focus on Transmission Line design. You will design and assist with the planning and supervision of transmission line projects.

Responsibilities

  • Performs designs of high voltage transmission lines.
  • Consults with and provides guidance to project stakeholders and managerial staff regarding engineering requirements for construction of various designs, modifications, and structural repairs.
  • Use computer-assisted design (CAD), PLSCAD software and drawing tools to accurately analyze, render and communicate designs.
  • Plans projects based on the analysis of relevant materials such as drawings, blueprints, aerial photography, survey reports, maps, and other geologic and topographical data such as Lidar.
  • Estimates materials, equipment, and labor needed to determine project costs.
  • Collaborates with electrical engineers and other groups as needed on projects.
  • Collaborates with architects and contractors to ensure projects progress properly.
  • Collaborates with surveyors (or directs and participates in surveying) to establish installations or reference points, grades, elevations, and other factors that will affect construction.
  • Monitors project progress and ensures design specifications, safety, and sanitation standards are met.
  • On completion of a project, inspects, designs or comments on proposed repairs, and maintains details on the structures as needed.
  • Develops, reviews and maintains company design standards, specifications, engineering procedures, and equipment configuration settings templates.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Who you are

We will be filling this role at the Associate, Mid-career or Senior level.

Associate Engineer level- Entry-level engineer. Expectations are that individuals at this level will be learning the technical aspects of the VELCO power system as well as the processes, tools and physical attributes of the system and completing engineering assignments under direct supervision.

Qualifications include a BS in Engineering or Engineering Technology.

Mid-Career (Experienced) Engineer level- The individual will understand the Vermont power system and area of specialty as well as VELCO standards and procedures and be able to competently complete engineering assignments. General oversight is expected on technical aspects of assignments from the department manager or more experienced engineers.

This level is for the practicing engineer with typically 3-6 years of experience.

Senior Engineer level- This level recognizes the talent and skills of a practicing engineer capable of making competent engineering recommendations and decisions, managing technical projects with minimum level of oversight, and mentoring less experienced engineers. Expertise in a particular area of engineering is evident in this classification. It is typical for an individual to be in this job classification for the majority of their career.

This level is for accomplished engineers, with typically more than 7 years of experience. A Bachelor of Engineering or Engineering Technology is required. A Master’s Degree in Engineering or a specialized industry credential such as a Certificate in Power Systems Management, together with a history of sustained exceptional performance, is a plus.

Knowledge/Skills

  • Fundamental understanding of civil engineering principles as they relate to transmission systems and practices, including materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or repair of transmission lines, and to a lesser degree, substations, along with conventional buildings, access roads, water, sewage systems and other related structures.
  • Knowledgeable in computer-assisted design (CAD), PLSCAD and other design, data recording, and analyzation software, or possesses the understanding of how these are used in the designs of transmission infrastructure projects.
  • Complimentary understanding of related electrical deign principals such as grounding, short circuit impacts, insulations levels and other related principles.
  • Ability to understand and apply NESC, NEC and OSHA safety regulations related to assigned projects.
  • Ability to identify and solve complex problems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to be both creative and analytical.
  • Extremely detail-oriented and accurate.

Important Considerations

• VELCO is headquartered in Rutland, Vermont. This is a hybrid position and the expectation is that the incumbent will spend at least two days per week onsite and more as needed.
• Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
• Must be able to respond to off-duty calls, particularly in the event of system emergencies, prolonged equipment and/or customer outages.
• Must maintain a valid driver’s license.
